Two Delmarva Power contractors were shot while working in Wilmington Monday.

According to Wilmington Police, the incident occurred just after 1:30 p.m. on July 22, 2019, in the 1800 block of West 2nd Street in the city's Hilltop section.

A spokesman for Delmarva Power's parent company said the men were installing a new gas main and service lines to homes and businesses when they were struck by bullets.

"We work closely with our contractors every day on projects across our service area and this event impacts all of us at Delmarva Power," said Jake Sneeden, regional communications manager for Pepco Holdings. "Our focus is now on our contractors, their families and coworkers, and our Delmarva Power employees."

The workers have not been identified, but police said a 48-year-old man is in stable condition at an area hospital while a 31-year-old man is listed in critical condition.

The incident remains under investigation, according to authorities. Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Wilmington Police Det. Steven Bender at 302.576.3621 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1.800.TIP.3333.
