Wilmington Police are trying to piece together the details of what led up to a vehicle smashing into the side of a downtown office building Saturday night.

Police said when their officers arrived they found the 23-year old driver had been shot. He was pronounced dead later at a hospital.

Officers scoured the scene for evidence and eventually determined the driver was shot on I-95 outside the Wilmington city limits.

The vehicle is believed to have come down 11th Street from Adams Street, before leaving the roadway at the triangle intersection of 11th and Jefferson streets at Delaware Avenue.

The vehicle ended up embedded in the wall of 500 Delaware Avenue, the building that is the headquarters for Wilmington Savings Fund Society (WSFS).

The collision brought down a wall panel on the side that houses the Pure Bread Deli but officials said the damage was more cosmetic and not structural.
