A car wedged under a tractor-trailer on U.S. 202 in Fairfax on Tuesday, November 26, 2019

A 35-year-old Wilmington man died following a crash with a tractor-trailer along Route 202 in Fairfax Tuesday night, Delaware State Police announced Wednesday.

According to authorities, the victim was operating a Lexus RC350 sedan approaching the intersection at Powder Mill Road when it left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a light pole.

The car then reentered the roadway, struck the rear of a Mazda 3 stopped at a red light being operated by a 22-year-old Wilmington man, then continued on and wedged itself under a Volvo tractor-trailer being operated by a 37-year-old Reading, Pennsylvania, man who was stopped at the same light. 

The operators of the Mazda and tractor-trailer were both properly restrained and did not suffer any injuries. The Lexus operator was transported to Christiana Hospital and pronounced dead. Police are withholding identification of the victim pending notification of next-of-kin. 

The roadway was closed for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated.
