A dump truck spilled part of its load of asphalt onto the northbound lanes of the Route 1 flyover ramp at the Christiana Mall on Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. on July 16, 2019, and took nearly two-and-a-half hours to clean up, snarling traffic in the Christiana, Bear, and New Castle areas.

The truck was northbound on Route 7 alongside the flyover ramp when it skidded into the Jersey barrier on the left side of the road and sent a wave of asphalt spilling over the concrete wall and onto Route 1.

Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) workers using a front end loader, hand shovels and a street sweeper cleaned the mess up.

DelDOT was able to keep one lane of traffic on both Routes 1 and 7 open during the cleanup.

Delaware State troopers are investigating the cause of the crash.
