Caravel celebrates after Natalie Paoli's home run against Wilmington Charter

Caravel's Savannah Sobolak hit a home run with 5 RBIs and pitcher Savannah Sheats tossed a 2-hit shutout in a 8-0 win over Wilmington Charter.

Sheats set the tone on the mound, retiring the first 14 batters she faced before Charter's Casey Mayer hit a single to shallow right.

Caravel's offense by then had given her plenty of support, as they loaded the bases for 9-hitter Sobolak, who lined a single to center, letting Gianna Ioannoni and pinch-runner Danielle DeBenedictis to score for the 2-0 lead.

Natalie Paoli followed with a sacrifice fly, stretching the lead to 3-0.

They'd look for more in the 4th, but with 2 on and 1 out, Sobolak hit a fly to medium center field. Taylor Gillis made the catch and one-hopped a strike to the plate that beat the runner, keeping the score 3-0, in what was only her second best play of the game.

Caravel's Paoli led off the 5th inning with a line drive homer to center field, and after Courtney Brobst's single and Breanna Bryant's double, perhaps the play of the year in Delaware high school sports came next.

Mia Guerreri launched a shot towards straightaway center field. Gillis raced back to the wall, reached up, and as she was making the catch above the 3-foot wall, she somersaulted over it, holding on to the softball for the out.

She then had the poise to throw the ball in, and the relay nearly was in time, but it didn't matter as the ball was dead after she took it over the wall, so Guerreri got a sacrifice fly out of the play.

Sobolak finished off her big game an inning later, with a 3-run shot to left to bring in Veronica Diomede and Brooke Holdsworth, who had both singled, to finish off the game.

Caravel advances to face Smyrna, a 2-1 winner over DMA, in the championship game Saturday.
