A large water main break in Wilmington has closed down an intersection in the city.
According to officials, the Department of Public Works is at Orange Street near 11th Street searching for the exact cause of the leak. Motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area.
With three major water mains converging at the intersection, officials said they've determined the break occurred along a 20-inch water main "that dates to 1875," and is a low-service line, which means officials don't anticipate any customers losing utility access while repairs are made.
There was no estimate for when it might be fixed, and officials noted by Tuesday afternoon crews had not yet been able to control water flow via valves, so they would need to dig into the street to directly plug the main.
Orange Street is currently closed between 10th and 11th streets, and 11th Street is closed from Orange to West streets.
