Spoiler alert: you may want to watch this video before reading the story about an attempted surprise reunion between a sister and brother at William Penn High School:
It would turn into a memorable birthday for Tyler Owens. The senior was escorted to the lobby for an "interview" with the media about being a student-athlete.
As he spoke, Airman First Class Lauren Owens, his sister and a 2017 graduate of William Penn High School, emerged. Tyler burst into a smile as he saw her for the first time in several months.
It was also A1C Owens' first visit home in about a year. She had undergone basic training in Texas as well as meteorology certification in Mississippi.
"It's super nice to be home," she said.
It was not the first family surprise of the day. Earlier, Lauren had shown up unannounced at the workplace of her mother, Jackie Owens.
"She surprised me at work, we came over here and surprised him," Jackie Owens said. "It just worked out to be his 18th birthday today, so it was pretty cool."
Tyler Owens expressed pride in what his sister was doing for her country, as the family looked forward to a month together before she is stationed in South Carolina.
"It definitely makes me proud. She made a big step.... pretty proud."
