A 67-year-old woman was killed while walking in the middle of the roadway outside a daycare center in Smyrna Tuesday evening, Delaware State Police announced Wednesday. 

According to authorities, Carole Anne Kasson of Smyrna, was not wearing reflective clothing or carrying a light while crossing DuPont Boulevard not using a crosswalk when she was struck by a Hyundai Sonata. 

She was in the middle of the left lane in the area of East Glenwood Avenue, near the Smarty Pants Academy, when the vehicle approached and attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision. 

The operator of the vehicle, a 37-year-old Clayton woman, remained at the scene. She was wearing her seat belt and received treatment at an area hospital for minor injuries. Three juveniles also in the vehicle were uninjured. 

The roadway was closed for approximately four-and-a-half hours while the scene was investigated
