Wesley defensive end Shymere Vessels has been named 1 of the 6 captains for the Wolverines going into the 2019 season opener at Franklin Pierce on Saturday.
Vessels, a former state champion at Woodbridge, accounted for 6 tackles for loss and 2 sacks during his sophomore season as part of a 8-10 player rotation along the defensive line last year.
He's joined on the defensive side by LB Dante Daniel and SS Coray Williams.
Both Daniel and Williams are returning starters, and are the Wolverines' 2 leading returning tacklers from last year. Williams made 79 steps with 3 interceptions, while Daniel recorded 70 tackles (3 for loss) and an interception last year.
Running Back E.J. Lee is back for his senior year after fighting off nicks towards the end of last year to rush for 952 yards and 12 touchdowns. The dual-threat also caught 37 passes for 389 yards and a score.
Fellow seniors WR Ruhann Peele and LG Josh Hughes are the other captains.
Peele caught 45 passes for 667 yards and 7 touchdowns last year, and will look to fill the void left by the graduation of Alex Kemp, who had 1,090 yards in receptions last year.
Hughes is the only senior on a young Wesley offensive line, that will start four sophomores in Brandon Bradford, Gregg Clark, Ty-key Moore, and Andrew Risper.
Wesley will open their season against Franklin Pierce, a Division II school playing its first varsity game in school history, Saturday at noon in Rindge, New Hampshire.
You'll be able to hear Wesley throughout the season on AM1150 and 101.7FM WDEL, WDEL.com, and the Forever Media App.
