Elmer Daniels free

A Wilmington man, wrongfully imprisoned for decades, is now a free man.

Elmer Daniels was released from Howard Young prison Thursday, December 13, 2018, just before lunchtime--one day after his 57th birthday.

Daniels, who was 18 at the time, was convicted in 1980 for the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

Philadelphia attorney Emeka Igwe worked Daniels pro bono, and secured his freedom by uncovering flawed testimony, which led to the state filing a motion to dismiss the indictment against Daniels. That motion was accepted by a judge, prompting Daniels' release.

WDEL has reached out to Igwe to speak to Daniels.
