UPDATE: Orange Street was reopened by 6 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2020.
Wilmington officials announced Tuesday afternoon they hoped public works crews would have a downtown section of the city reopened in time for the morning commute Wednesday.
The Department of Public Works responded to the intersection of 11th and Orange streets on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, and discovered a three-foot section of a 20-inch, low-service water main had ruptured, flooding the area.
The area remained closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic Tuesday afternoon, as crews had to work carefully to determine where and which of the three water mains that converge on that intersection broke, causing the issue.
The break happened along infrastructure dating to 1875, and there was no interruption to utility service for any customers.
