Wilmington firefighters and members of the New Castle County dive team spent much of Friday morning searching for a person reported to have jumped into the Christina River.

Fire officials said the incident was reported by several witnesses around 9:20 a.m. on July 12, 2019, at the Riverwalk under the South Walnut Street Bridge.

Wilmington firefighters, on land and by boat, searched extensively for the victim as divers prepared to enter the water.

A Delaware State Police helicopter hovered overhead while firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to aid in the search.

After about 90 minutes, and following one dive which proved unsuccessful, fire officials declared the situation as a recovery operation.

Fire officials terminated efforts shortly before 2 p.m.
